Feature Film From Director Kathy Kolla Follows Early L.A. Music Icon Billy Bones

LOS ANGELES (July 7, 2015) – Nearly 40 years after punk rock made its explosive appearance on the Hollywood music scene, a new documentary focusing on enigmatic vocalist Billy Bones is set to premiere at the Downtown Film Festival Los Angeles. The feature film “Who Is Billy Bones?” will screen on Closing Night of the festival, July 26, at the historic Regent Theater.

“Los Angeles has always been on the cutting edge of music and entertainment,” said Kathy Kolla, the film’s director. “So it’s only fitting for the world premiere of ‘Who Is Billy Bones?’ to be right here in downtown Los Angeles, particularly during this exciting time of urban renewal.”

As lead singer of the seminal L.A. punk rock band The Skulls, Steven “Billy Bones” Fortuna was an early pioneer of the genre, creating a lasting influence for uncounted musical successors. The 77-minute documentary focuses on Fortuna’s unwavering perseverance amid adversity throughout the past four decades, and includes interviews with rock musicians Mike Dirnt (Green Day), Christa Collins (X Factor), Chas T. Gray (Wall of Voodoo) and Kevin Preston (Prima Donna) among others.

The picture includes never-before-seen footage of L.A.’s first punk music venue, The Masque, shot exclusively for the project, along with archive interview footage of The Masque’s original proprietor, Brendan Mullen.

In addition to the world premiere screening, a Q&A session with filmmaker Kolla and a live music performance by Billy Bones will highlight the night’s program.

This is the first feature-length documentary film from director Kathy Kolla and Cola Kat Productions.
